Sermon Title: Names for the Messiah – Wonderful Counselor
This passage from Isaiah is well known today and associated primarily with Jesus in part because Handel included it in the Messiah. Today we consider how Jesus meets the Royal expectation of “Wonderful Counselor.” Clearly Jesus was not what the people or religious professionals were expecting. Yet, Jesus transforms those expectations and uses them as a mirror for us to consider what we want and expect from a Messiah, a Christ, a Savior. Jesus was wise, displaying inexplicable wisdom which threatened the established order then unlike most “kings” Jesus passes the torch to followers who continue to be transformers rather than stewards of the status quo.
