Sermon: Liberty = New Creation

This week we celebrated Independence Day. We may  have had a cookout and watched fireworks. Hopefully we reflected on the risks the founders took and the values and aspirations they were aiming for. Many have struggled so that others could experience freedom. Likewise our spiritual journey includes struggle. Change, and therefore transformation, is hard and messy. Like our freedom as a nation, our freedom in the spiritual sense comes from the struggle in our lives and often because others have paved the way for us. In this passage Paul speaks about the struggle between flesh and spirit. The world flesh here is more about the human condition than specifically fleshly desires. We humans are in a tug of war between our personal ego desires and the aspirations of our founding Creator. In what ways have you become a new creation? In what ways do you still need more “new” creation?
