Pentecost is a very special Sunday. It was one of the main three Christian holidays for hundreds of years (along with Epiphany and Easter). The events of that 50th day were rich with meaning and echo our Jewish heritage back to Genesis. All are included, men and women, Jews and new converts, old and young, slaves and free, no matter the language or where they were from, all were gifted with the same Spirit. This is the birth of the church. On this day God puts God’s mission in the hands of the church (“called out”). The life breath of God is blown into the people and they become the Body of Christ. We continue to be called to be the Body of Christ in the world.
